Adrz builds hybrid operating room: future plan becomes reality

11 Mar 2026

Nine years ago, Medexs built the operating rooms (ORs) for Adrz in Goes using modular construction. This project was deliberately designed with foresight. One OR – OR6 – was structurally prepared for a future transformation into a hybrid OR. This vision is now paying off: the space has been successfully converted into a fully-fledged hybrid OR, ready for the care of today and tomorrow.

Adrz is a general hospital with locations in Goes and Vlissingen and, together with ZorgSaam in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, it is the only hospital in the Zeeland region. With the commissioning of this hybrid OR, Zeeland now has a future-proof, top-level surgical facility.

Precision and safety as the main reasons
The demand for the hybrid OR came primarily from vascular surgery. The hybrid OR is equipped with the ARTIS pheno from Siemens Healthineers, an advanced X-ray and imaging system that enables minimally invasive surgery and highly accurate imaging. “Besides allowing us to work even more precisely and safely with this system, it also allows us to create 3D images and requires less X-rays to achieve the same result,” says Imre Cornelis, project leader for technical medical technology and clinical physics. “This is beneficial for both patients and staff.”

Thinking ahead pays off
Thanks to the constructional reservations Medexs made during construction in 2016, the conversion in 2025 could be completed relatively smoothly and with minimal impact on care. Operating Room 6 was already more spacious than the other operating rooms at the time. A technical room had also been prepared (which served temporarily as storage).

During the transformation, Medexs took care of the entire structural and electrical engineering scope. The work included installing a new floor, adding extra steel to the ceiling for suspension systems, and constructing additional steel structures under the floor in the crawl space for the Maquet operating room table. In addition, a temporary opening was created between the operating room and the technical room to allow for safe and efficient installation of systems, after which the room was completely closed again. A lead wall was also installed and the plenum curtains were re-covered.

After completion of the work, the validation and RL7 measurements were performed by Mediservice, officially clearing the operating room.

Construction while care continues
The renovation of the operating room presented complex logistical challenges, as the rest of the operating rooms had to remain fully operational. During the construction phase, patients continued to be treated and operated on in the adjacent operating rooms.

To minimize the risk of contamination, much of the logistics were organized externally. The operating room was completely partitioned internally, and a temporary external entrance was created. Imre explains: “Everything that had to be brought in, except the Siemens ARTIS pheno itself, went through the window.”

A major puzzle, tight schedule
Many parties worked simultaneously on the project: Medexs for the construction, Siemens Healthineers for the hybrid system and monitors, and various suppliers of pendants, medical gases, and other technology. Medexs played a central role in the coordination and implementation.

Coordinating schedules and deliveries proved to be the most challenging. “If you maintain good communication, you really achieve a great result,” says Imre. “We are proud of this joint achievement. And the doctors are very happy and enthusiastic about the renovated operating room.”

The hybrid operating room has been fully operational since November 2025. Currently, vascular surgeons and radiologists operate together in it, which has resulted in a new form of collaboration: specialized teamwork at a single bedside. Trauma surgeons will soon also be using the hybrid operating room for complex trauma care.
