New Pain Clinic for Amstelland Hospital Realised Within Months Through Modular Expansion

The hospital’s pain clinic has proven highly successful, leading to a growing number of patients. For Amstelland Hospital, this created the need for a rapid expansion of its facilities. In December 2025, Medexs installed 12 modules for the new pain clinic in just one day. Covering 216 m², the extension represents a significant upgrade to the existing facilities.

Following the prefabrication of the modules at the Medexs factory, the finishing works were completed on-site within a short timeframe. This prefabricated construction process minimises disruption on-site, improves efficiency, and accelerates the overall building schedule. Thanks to the modular approach, the hospital was able to respond quickly to the increasing demand for care while ensuring minimal impact on ongoing patient services.

Necessary Expansion
The direct reason for the new building project was the success of the existing pain clinic. Demand had outgrown capacity, while the current location offered no room for further expansion. Gökhan Günes, Manager of Facilities and Building Services at Amstelland Hospital, explains: “Due to the success of the clinic and the positive feedback we received, we needed to expand. Unfortunately, this was not possible at the clinic’s original location.”

As the hospital has long-term redevelopment plans, a permanent renovation was considered less attractive from both a financial and logistical perspective. The modular solution provided by Medexs proved to be the ideal alternative. “It is more cost-effective to install a modular building and remove it later than to completely reorganise the hospital,” says Gökhan.
In addition, the modules can be reused for other outpatient departments during the different phases of the planned redevelopment. This makes the solution highly circular and future-proof.

Seamless Integration and Technical Challenges
Thanks to the constructional reservations Medexs made during construction in 2016, the conversion in 2025 could be completed relatively smoothly and with minimal impact on care. Operating Room 6 was already more spacious than the other operating rooms at the time. A technical room had also been prepared (which served temporarily as storage).

During the transformation, Medexs took care of the entire structural and electrical engineering scope. The work included installing a new floor, adding extra steel to the ceiling for suspension systems, and constructing additional steel structures under the floor in the crawl space for the Maquet operating room table.

In addition, a temporary opening was created between the operating room and the technical room to allow for safe and efficient installation of systems, after which the room was completely closed again. A lead wall was also installed and the plenum curtains were re-covered.

Successful Collaboration

The new pain clinic is not only larger, but also more efficiently designed, featuring a spacious waiting area, multiple treatment rooms, and office spaces. According to Gökhan, it represents a significant improvement: “Compared to the previous situation, it is much more spacious, and the technology incorporated into the facility is far more efficient.”

The hospital has been very positive about its collaboration with Medexs, particularly highlighting the short communication lines and flexibility of project manager Ralph. Any minor issues or improvement points were addressed quickly and effectively. Gökhan summarises the experience as follows: “My overall experience with Medexs has been very positive. They think along with us and make things easy rather than complicated.”
