Operating Rooms UMCU

For Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, Medexs completed three operating rooms, adjacent to existing OR complex. The Princess Maxima Centre makes use of these spaces. These ORs meet the highest requirements in the medical field.

Hospital Utrecht

Background information

The rooms must be completed quickly and with a height of six meters, the location is unique. Furthermore, the operating rooms must meet the latest requirements in the medical field and be able to handle X-ray equipment.

Medexs developed three temporary operating rooms together with the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital and energy company Engie in just seven months. That’s twice as fast as with regular modular construction. On the site itself, only steel pillars have been erected, a frame on which the operating rooms will be built. The rooms were prefabricated by Jan Snel in Montfoort. After installing the units, including the technical room, the structure was roofed and the facade panels were installed. The ORs were then furnished and connected to the existing structure. In 2021 and 2022, the current OR complex will be renovated and expanded. When all of that is complete, the temporary structure will be eliminated.

Advantage

Medexs provided total coordination and construction of the project. By building everything in Montfoort and driving the posts into the ground on site instead of piling, the inconvenience to patients and staff was limited and the existing building could simply remain open during construction. Thanks to concurrent engineering, it was possible to deliver the entire process faster and with better quality. Jan Snel delivered the project in accordance with WIP guideline class 1, performance level 1. In cooperation with medical specialists, modular construction can also be perfectly achieved in this industry.
