Modular Laboratory Expansion Abbott Laboratories

Medexs played a key role in the expansion of the laboratory at Abbott Laboratories GmbH in Hannover, Germany. The project, which we carried out on behalf of Vanguard, involved the supply of high-quality modules that together form a BSL-3 laboratory. Abbott opted for a modular design and prefabricated construction to be operational quickly.

The new laboratory covers 122 m² and is designed to allow for future vertical expansion. The modules are taller than usual, with all technical installations neatly concealed above the ceiling. This ensures efficient use of the space.

High Standards
The laboratory had to meet very high standards, including the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Only cleanroom-suitable materials were used for the finishing, such as a special epoxy coating on the walls and a plastered ceiling.
Safety and integrity of the spaces are paramount. The building is equipped with controlled airflows and airlocks. A special system continuously monitors the air pressure (overpressure/underpressure) to ensure safe working conditions.

Technical Challenges
The project presented specific technical challenges. For example, there was no sewer connection at the location where the modules were to be installed. A sewage pump system was installed to transport wastewater over a greater distance and height to the existing building’s sewer system. In addition, various safety features were incorporated, such as emergency stops, escape routes, and shower and eyewash facilities. The weighing room features a weighted floor to support heavy equipment and pallets.

Due to strict GMP requirements, extensive documentation and quality assurance were necessary. Medexs managed all the paperwork related to the qualification and validation processes. This included quality testing during prefabrication and testing to verify that the installed equipment complies with DQ, IQ, OQ, and PQ protocols (design, installation, operation, and performance).
